L’ Incoronazione di Poppea
Second House
May 28. and 31., June 4.
The Coronation of Poppea
At the centre of events is the power-crazed Poppea. She aspires to the top level of the hierarchy and seduces Emperor Nero. This is a difficult situation for both Empress Ottavia and Ottone, Poppea's former lover. A classic drama unfolds, where the struggle for power and riches paints an unattractive portrait of humankind. In this respect not much has changed since the opera was written 365 years ago. The performance portrays the decadence of the late Roman Empire – with obvious parallels to our own times. But it all comes together towards the end in one of the loveliest duets ever composed, Pur Ti Miro. History has not been too kind to Claudio Monteverdi. Out of his 18 operas, only three of the scores remain. However, it is a solid musical drama we inherit. Last year we presented Orfeo on Stage 2. This year we present The Coronation of Poppea in the same location, in a new production with Norwegian Ole Anders Tandberg as director. Tandberg is a theatre director who is in much in demand and who is responsible for several critically acclaimed productions at the National Theatre.
