Ariadne auf Naxos

Main House

After working on grand pieces such as Salome, Elektra and The Knight of the Rose, the composer Richard Strauss and poet Hugo von Hofmannsthal arrived at a new and unusual project: Ariadne auf Naxos. This is an opera about an opera - at the Opera. Proceedings take place at the magnificent residence of the richest man in Vienna who is hosting a party. He commands a tragic opera, but fears that it will be too heavy and droll for its selected audience. He therefore additionally hires a commedia dell'arte troupe (troupe of Italian jesters) to present introductory entertainment.
This gives rise to the originators' ingenious dramaturgy: the Count's courtier announces a completely necessary change. The climax of the evening is a huge fireworks display at midnight. Due to lack of time it is decided that the comedy and tragedy must be performed simultaneously!
