Heavenly Christmas tradition

Christmas is not the same without the Hallelujah Chorus Experience Handel’s Messiah in a unique version for the Norwegian Wind Ensemble with choir!

250-year-old holiday tradition

“Whether I was in my body or out of my body as I wrote it I know not. God knows.” This is what Georg Friedrich Handel wrote after having completed his timeless masterpiece Messiah in only 24 days. The oratorio is one of the best-known and most popular choral works and premiered in Dublin in 1742.

Since then, Handel’s Messiah has become a beloved Christmas tradition around the world and can easily be called a Christian hit parade, with the iconic Hallelujah Chorus as the most famous movement.

The human and the divine

Handel is considered one of the greatest composers of the Baroque era and his music is the first work in the history of music to be performed continuously from the day of its premiere.

Even though the subject of his music was religious, Handel’s foremost concern was the human response to the divine. This is especially evident in Messiah, which unlike his other oratorios, is more meditative than dramatic.

Signature work for Norway’s oldest orchestra

During this concert, we get to hear Messiah in a unique, chamber music version arranged specially for the Norwegian Wind Ensemble by their own trumpet player Stian Aareskjold. It has become a signature work for Norway’s oldest orchestra that was started in 1734 – eight years before the premiere of Messiah!

The ensemble comprises 24 professional musicians and their speciality is to ‘blow’ new life into well-known works from the past. The conductor will be Irishman Peter Whelan, the ensemble’s curator for early music. The chorus has been assembled specifically for this concert and comprises 12 singers from across Europe.
