Jo Strømgren Kompani:
The Convent

An absurd trinity
Award-winning and acclaimed both nationally and internationally: Jo Strømgren’s satirical nun performance is coming to the Opera!
«Big Brother meets The Sound of Music!»
That’s how The Observer describes The Convent. Jo Strømgren himself calls the production a mix of Jean-Paul Sartre and Donald Duck. No matter how you describe this absurd, cruel, and hysterically funny universe: This is a performance you don’t want to miss!
bsurd, pointed, beautiful, funny, and frightening. All at once.

The success returns
In a convent deep within a lonely valley, three nuns nurture their own form of trinity. It’s far from easy. The bread is dry, and their friendship is fading. Even the water doesn’t taste good anymore. The time to receive some kind of sign from above is long overdue. Holding on to the holy truth is a difficult task – and even harder when you’re hungry.
The award-winning The Convent premiered in 2006 and toured 17 countries to rave reviews. Its revival 20 years later is inevitable – if we were worried about the world back then, we’re terrified now.
For real passion you need nuns.

Dance, theatre, and abstract language
On the surface, the performance is a satire of religious institutions and how they undermine human nature. On a deeper level, it can be seen as a critique of all ideologies that impose authoritarian dogmas on individuals. And perhaps most importantly, it aligns with Jo Strømgren Kompani’s eternal quest to highlight tragically human behavior.
The Convent features the company’s signature blend of dance, theatre, and an abstract language.
One of the best things about The Convent was its universality. But the performing was the greatest pleasure.
