Wagner's The Ring – without words but with all the magnificence

How does Wagner's The Ring sound without singers but with a full orchestra? The Ring Without Words offers a rare opportunity: the chance to experience the most magnificent musical moments from the entire Ring of the Nibelung in one concert evening.

Instant Ring

This 80-minute orchestral work was created by the legendary conductor Lorin Maazel, who in 1987 collaborated with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra to distil Wagner's entire operatic cycle into a purely orchestral piece – without compromising its dramatic power or unforgettable themes.

From water to fire

The Norwegian National Opera Orchestra brings you the wild ride of the Valkyries, Siegfried's heroic horn call, Brünnhilde's awakening and the fiery downfall of Ragnarok – all woven together with the help of Wagner's leitmotifs and seamless compositional structure. It opens with the primordial sound of the Rhine River and ends with the world in flames and transformation.

A symphonic prelude

The Ring Without Words is a symphonic journey through mythology, power and humanity. For those familiar with these musical dramas, you can enjoy hearing well-known motifs in new contexts. For those new to Wagner, it offers an excellent entry point – or shall we say prelude – to the main event: the Norwegian National Opera & Ballet will present the entire Ring of the Nibelung between 2027 and 2030. The music director Edward Gardner will grace the conductor's podium both for the present and future performances.
