The Norwegian National Opera & Ballet
The Norwegian National Opera & Ballet is the country’s largest music and performing arts institution, and presents opera, ballet and concerts of the highest artistic quality. The Norwegian National Opera & Ballet consists of the companies the Norwegian National Ballet and Norwegian National Ballet 2, the Norwegian National Opera and Opera Studio WOYS, in addition to the Opera Orchestra, the Opera Chorus, the Children’s Chorus and the Norwegian National Ballet School.
The Norwegian National Opera gave its first performance at Folketeatret in 1958, with Kirsten Flagstad as opera director. In 2008, the new opera house in Bjørvika opened, and we changed our name to the Norwegian National Opera & Ballet. This reflected the fact that opera and ballet were now given equal status as art forms within our organisation.
The Opera House in Bjørvika is our main venue, but we also perform in other locations, both nationally and internationally. We have around 600 permanent employees, representing nearly 40 professions and nationalities.
