Romeo and Juliet

The world's most beautiful love story – told through ballet
Young passion and brutal tragedy: don’t miss the Norwegian National Ballet's new full-length performance based on Shakespeare's timeless classic!
A new version of an ever-popular ballet
Romeo and Juliet is one of the most frequently performed ballets in history. The Norwegian National Ballet now brings the love drama to the Main Stage in a completely new guise – a ballet with a classical style, choreographed by Kaloyan Boyadjiev.
Family feud on tip-toe
The Capulet and Montague families are bitter enemies, yet it is love at first sight between Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet. The young couple confess their devotion to each other on Juliet's balcony – and secretly marry.
The family feud intensifies when Romeo avenges the murder of his friend Mercutio, who was killed by Juliet's cousin Tybalt. As punishment, Romeo is banished from the city. Meanwhile, Juliet's parents try to force her to marry another suitor.
To be together, Romeo and Juliet must risk everything.
The choreographer behind The Nutcracker
Many great choreographers have created their own versions of William Shakespeare's timeless tale, set to Prokofiev's moving score.
This time, Kaloyan Boyadjiev has taken on the love drama. He is a former soloist with the Norwegian National Ballet, and as a choreographer he is the creative force behind a number of acclaimed ballets – including our version of The Nutcracker. Almost 200,000 people have seen our Christmas ballet in Norway, and now it's also being performed in Bordeaux and Leipzig.
Boyadjiev's Romeo and Juliet is given a fresh new look created in the opera house in Bjørvika. The set design and costumes are by Christopher Oram, who has previously won Tony and Olivier awards for his work.
Passion set to Prokofiev
Prokofiev's poignant music, played by the Norwegian National Opera Orchestra, sets the tone for romantic moments and brutal feuds, steering the ballet towards its inevitable, tragic conclusion.
Expect passionate duets: the loving couple’s very first encounter, the famous balcony scene and the heartbreaking final scene.
