A playful evening of ballet set to baroque music

Four exciting choreographers interpret music by the Baroque masters. Enjoy the dancers of the Norwegian National Ballet performing alongside the musicians of Barokksolistene.

Cina Espejord, Melissa Hough and Garrett Smith have each created a new work, while Liam Scarlett's strikingly beautiful Vespertine returns for another outing.

Baroque dance in 2019

Past meets present as these rising young choreographers take inspiration from the music of the Baroque period. All four choreographers have in common that they create works that, each in their own way, bring classical ballet into the present. All of them are dancers turned choreographers whose works are performed in many different countries.

Sought-after choreographers

Liam Scarlett's Vespertine was created for the Norwegian National Ballet in 2013. Scarlett was inspired by the music of Arcangelo Corelli to create an abstract, sensual work against a backdrop of hanging chandeliers. It wasn't long before the work was in demand overseas; the Norwegian National Ballet danced it in Baden-Baden, and it was later performed by both the Atlanta Ballet and Ballet Nice. Now it returns to the stage on which it was created.

Espejord, Hough and Smith have all created ballets for the Norwegian National Ballet in the past. You may remember Ibsen's Ghosts, which was created by Espejord in collaboration with Marit Moum Aune. Or perhaps Hough's reworking of Sleeping Beauty in the production Sleepless Beauty, which was called Epic Short. Garrett Smith has created works for the Norwegian National Ballet 2 and the House of Choreography, and he kicked off 2017 with a premiere for none other than the Bolshoi Ballet.
