Luthando Qave

South African-born baritone Luthando Qave (b. 1986) is one of the most sought-after singers of his generation, now based in Sweden. In 2026, he was named recipient of the Birgit Nilsson Stipendium, one of Scandinavia’s most prestigious awards for young opera singers. 

Qave performs regularly at leading opera houses, including the Royal Swedish Opera, The Royal Opera in Copenhagen, Gothenburg Opera, Malmö Opera and Norrlandsoperan. During the 2024/25 season, he appeared as the Herald in Wagner’s Lohengrin at Malmö Opera and this Spring he sings Escamillo in Bizet’s Carmen, followed by a role debut as Dick Halloran in the opera based on the Stephen King novel (and Stanley Kubrick movie) The Shining by Paul Moravec in the fall of 2026. Luthando Qave’s signature roles include Figaro in Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia at the Royal Swedish Opera and Marcello in Puccini’s La bohème; roles he has performed more than 100 performances at opera houses and festivals around the world, including the Glyndebourne Opera Festival.

During the 2024/25 season, he appeared as the Herald in Wagner’s Lohengrin at Malmö Opera and as Robert in Tchaikovsky’s Iolanta at Gothenburg Opera. In recent seasons, Qave has also drawn particular attention for his portrayal of Mamoud in John Adams’ The Death of Klinghoffer at Norrlandsoperan. 

His repertoire spans Mozart, Rossini, Puccini, Verdi, Wagner and contemporary opera, and includes roles such as Conte in Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro, Valentin in Gounod’s Faust, Schaunard and Marcello in La bohème, Silvio in Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci, Guglielmo in Mozart’s Così fan tutte, Leporello in Don Giovanni, Fiorello in Il barbiere di Siviglia, Fermer in Janáček’s Jenůfa, the Mandarin in Puccini’s Turandot, and a Flemish Deputy in Verdi’s Don Carlo. 

Additional appearances include Dan Cairo in Bizet’s Carmen, Marco in Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi, and Melchior in Menotti’s Amahl and the Night Visitors. He has also taken part in Peter Sellars’ production of Purcell’s The Indian Queen, presented at venues including the Bolshoi Theatre, English National Opera, Teatro Real in Madrid and in Perm. 

Born and raised in South Africa, Qave began his career with Cape Town Opera and made his European debut touring Sweden as Jake in Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess. He moved to Sweden in 2008 to study at the University College of Opera in Stockholm, and later joined the Lindemann Young Artist Development Program at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. He subsequently made his Metropolitan Opera debut as Yamadori in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly and appeared as Guglielmo in the Met/Juilliard production of Così fan tutte.  

Now a Swedish citizen, Luthando Qave continues to build an international career distinguished by stylistic breadth, strong stage presence and a growing profile in both standard and contemporary repertoire.
