The programme features six of Schubert’s piano sonatas to be performed by Paul Lewis at the Oslo Opera House during the two concerts. This time, he will be performing excerpts from sonatas that Schubert did not manage to finish before dying at the early age of 31.  

Reliquie and youthful tones 

Sonata No. 15 was intended to comprise four movements, but like its nickname ‘Reliquie’ suggests, only parts of the sacred work were finished. Schubert completed two movements, which were not published until 1861 – 36 years after being written.  

Before the intermission, Lewis will be performing one of Schubert’s earlier works, often called the ‘Little A Major Sonata’. It was written when the composer was only 20 years of age during a holiday near Vienna.  

Among the greatest  

From adolescence to the end of life: After the intermission, we will hear the sonata nicknamed the ‘Premiere Grande Sonata’, which was one of only three sonatas published during Schubert’s lifetime.  

This sonata led many of his contemporaries to believe that he truly would live up to the title of Beethoven’s successor.  

Schubert specialist  

Schubert has long been a speciality for Paul Lewis and he has recorded a large number of Schubert’s works on the Harmonia Mundi record label. These recordings have placed him among the world’s elite concert pianists. This concert is part of his international tour, in which he is playing all of Schubert’s piano sonatas.
